Sabah Tourism Board Partners with DHL Express to Join GoGreen Plus Programme

The Sabah Tourism Board (STB), a state government agency under the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Environment, has announced its collaboration with DHL Express as the latest member of the GoGreen Plus programme. Through this partnership, STB aims to cut the carbon emissions of its international shipments by up to 30% by investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

“In promoting Sabah as a top travel destination, we understand the environmental impact of flights on our climate and natural resources,” said Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of STB. “As we work to attract more visitors, we remain dedicated to preserving our green heritage and biodiversity, which are key attractions. Partnering with DHL Express to transport our promotional materials to global tourism events using SAF is a vital step in our net-zero initiative, and we’re proud to drive the adoption of this sustainable solution.”

SAF, derived from alternative sources like used cooking oil, waste, and hydrogen, can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% compared to traditional jet fuel, making it a key solution in decarbonising the aviation sector. DHL’s GoGreen Plus programme is the only service in the global logistics industry that allows customers to use SAF to minimise their supply chain’s carbon footprint, with reductions independently verified by Société Générale de Surveillance for Scope 3 emissions.

This partnership aligns with the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) call for further action on SAF, which is projected to contribute the majority of CO2e reductions required for the sector to reach net-zero by 2050. STB’s use of GoGreen Plus applies to all international shipments of promotional materials to overseas tourism offices and tradeshows.

Julian Neo, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei, stated, “By adopting SAF, organisations are helping drive demand, raising awareness, and paving the way for greater production and affordability. SAF currently accounts for less than one percent of aviation fuel consumed globally, and we must accelerate efforts. We are thrilled to partner with STB as we work together toward energy transition goals.”

GoGreen Plus, launched in February 2023, is supported by partnerships with bp, Neste, and World Energy, enabling DHL to procure nearly 1.5 billion litres of SAF. Since air freight represents approximately 70% of DHL Group’s carbon footprint, sustainable air transport solutions are essential for reducing emissions in logistics.
